Qingming Festival: Business Etiquette Rules When Dealing with China

Understanding China's business culture is crucial for successful business operations, including knowledge of the country's customs. One of China's traditional holidays is Tomb-Sweeping Day, observed at the beginning of April.

This article explains what Qingming Festival is, why it's inappropriate to greet Chinese partners on this day, and how to effectively communicate with them during the holiday.

What is Qingming?

Qingming is one of the most important traditional festivals in the Chinese calendar, celebrated for over 2500 years. This day is dedicated to honoring deceased ancestors. Chinese people visit the graves of their relatives, tidy them up, bring flowers, food, and paper for burning.

Qingming is also seen as a time for connecting with nature and reflecting on life.

Qingming Traditions

Qingming is not just a day of remembrance; it is a day when families come together to remember the deceased and enjoy the springtime. Like any holiday, it has its traditions.

1. Grave visits. Chinese people visit the graves of their loved ones to clean them, lay flowers, fruits, and other offerings. They also light incense and burn paper money, clothing, and other items. Chinese believe that the deceased can use these in the afterlife.

It is believed that burning paper money during this time can provide material goods to ancestors that they may need in the afterlife.

2. Ancestral worship. Families gather to remember their ancestors, share stories, and pray for their souls.

3. Spring outings. Qingming also marks the beginning of spring, so people go on picnics, enjoy nature, and spend time with family.

This year, the Tomb-Sweeping Day falls on April 4th. Please note that from April 4th to 6th, it is a holiday in China. Therefore, try not to disturb Chinese suppliers and partners during this time.

Why you shouldn't greet with Qingming?

According to Chinese business etiquette, it's not recommended to discuss death or memorial services in an informal setting. Greeting someone with Qingming signifies incompetence and a lack of understanding of the cultural nuances of the country.

Although Qingming is one of the most important festivals in China, it carries a completely different meaning compared to similar Western holidays. Therefore, such greetings may inadvertently offend Chinese partners or put you in an awkward position.

How to behave correctly with Chinese partners during Qingming?

To successfully conduct business with China, it is important to understand not only the specifics of this holiday but also how to behave correctly with your business partners.

  1. Avoid business meetings and negotiations. During this time, the Chinese focus on family and honoring their ancestors.
  2. Reschedule planned phone calls and email correspondence.
  3. If you still need to contact your Chinese partner during Chinese New Year, be concise and restrained.
  4. Do not give gifts.

Understanding the traditions and etiquette of Qingming will help maintain good business relationships with Chinese suppliers. Knowledge of these rules will help you demonstrate respect for the culture and make cooperation more enjoyable and productive.
