Where and how to order large wholesale from China

Purchasing goods in large quantities is not only about saving money but also a way to build an effective sales strategy. However, switching to large wholesale, in addition to obvious advantages, also involves risks. Platforms for large wholesale purchasing

Large wholesale means purchasing in максимально large batches directly from a manufacturer or distributor. In this scheme, there are few intermediaries, and goods are shipped in thousands and hundreds of thousands of units.

What is the size of global wholesale? There is no exact answer. Much depends on the supplier and the niche. Since we deal with sourcing goods in China, let’s focus on the specifics of this market:

In China, wholesale is often tied to the concept of MOQ (minimum order quantity). This is the quantity at which a factory will start a production line or a seller will begin shipment. Note that MOQ and wholesale are not the same thing. MOQ can be as low as 10 units, but typically you won’t get low prices at that volume.

There are three key players in China’s wholesale market:

Alibaba — a B2B platform focused on export. The catalog includes Chinese and international companies, intermediaries, and small wholesalers. Many offer products certified to EU standards. In product descriptions, you will see MOQ, pricing based on volume, sample ordering options, and ODM/OEM.

1688 — a B2B marketplace for the domestic Chinese market. It truly offers the lowest prices, as the catalog mainly features factories, manufacturers, and large distributors, unlike the retail platform Taobao. On average, goods are 15–30% cheaper due to the lack of English support and marketing expenses.

When purchasing large wholesale on 1688, be very careful. The interface is only in Chinese, and payment is possible through local payment systems and SWIFT contracts.

Made-in-China — a platform specializing in heavy and high-tech industries: equipment, construction, energy, and auto parts. Suppliers focus exclusively on global wholesale starting from several hundred units. The selection of partners is smaller, but the vetting process is stricter than on Alibaba or 1688.

How to purchase and deliver wholesale goods

1. Supplier search in China and verification. Before launching production, a full audit is conducted: checking the business license, production capacity, and on-site inspection.
2. Sample and specification approval. Before production, it is recommended to order a “golden sample” — a reference product that will go into production. All specifications and materials must be прописані in the contract. For global wholesale, AQL — acceptable defect rate — is also specified.
3. Payment. The standard scheme is 30/70. A smaller amount is paid before production starts, and 70% after the goods are ready and inspected. Delivery may be included in the payment — it depends on the selected Incoterms.
4. Warehouse processing: receiving, quantity check, packaging, and preparation for shipment.

The main logistics method is sea freight. Goods are loaded into containers, and for very large wholesale, the entire 20- or 40-foot container is purchased (FCL). It is most выгодно to transport goods by sea: the cost per 1 kg is the lowest. Currently, delivery from China to Ukraine is multimodal with transit through Poland, and the average time is 60–75 days.

The final stage is customs clearance. As shipment size increases, so do the challenges. When you become a large importer, everything must be perfect:

• invoice;
• waybills;
• certificates;
• customs declaration;
• correctly calculated and paid duties.

A key challenge in customs clearance is document accuracy. Data in the foreign trade contract, invoice, waybills, and declaration must match exactly. Therefore, we recommend using a broker for processing and representing interests at customs.

Why large wholesale from China to Ukraine is profitable

The Ukrainian market has high potential. Advantages of global wholesale for entrepreneurs include:

1. Minimum cost price. The difference between small and large wholesale can be 20–50%.
2. Customization and OEM/ODM. Factories agree to change design, materials, specifications, and construction only for large batches.
3. Priority. Customer orders receive advantages: higher queue position and stricter quality control. Factories value large orders to maintain profitability.
4. Logistics optimization. When you scale to container shipments, you will notice savings. The cost per unit becomes lower and delivery faster, but only if the container is fully loaded.

Of course, wholesale purchasing also has disadvantages:

• you will need to freeze investments for a long time — months may pass from prepayment to receiving goods;
• significant warehouse capacity is required to handle and store goods;
  high responsibility for sales — if sales fail, a large amount of unsold stock will remain.
• Small and medium-sized businesses should not start with huge batches. Global wholesale is optimal for retail chains, distributors, and manufacturing enterprises.
