Peak Season 2025: Why Rates Are Rising and Space Is Getting Tighter

The freight market is in full swing, and the situation is changing rapidly. Global carriers, including Maersk (MSK), report vessel overloading and serious delays affecting logistics worldwide — including routes to Poland and Ukraine. Businesses must be ready to act fast, as every day of downtime equals lost profit.

Maersk Adds Extra Vessels: A Critical Situation

Maersk, one of the leading players in the container shipping market, is forced to deploy additional vessels to ease pressure on its main fleet. Overall, the company plans to add approximately 17,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) to maintain regular departures.

The reason: cargo volumes are exceeding capacity. Too many bookings, overloaded warehouses, and standard vessels failing to maintain the usual shipping rhythm. In particular, this is affecting sailings in WK30–WK32, covering late July through August.

Rate Cuts Are a Temporary Bonus, Not a Discount

To compensate for the inconvenience of delays, Maersk is reducing August rates by $100/40HQ. However, it’s important to understand that this is not a price drop — it’s a temporary market support measure. Meanwhile, carriers are trying to evenly distribute rolled-over shipments to avoid future chaos.

Limited Availability of Space

Other logistics companies are also working at full capacity: space on sailings is limited, and bookings fill up well in advance. As a result, August rates remain at July levels — but there’s no guarantee this will last.

Why This Matters for Your Business

For importers and exporters, the situation brings several crucial implications:

  • Delays may occur even if the cargo is fully ready.
  • Competition for space is intensifying.
  • Every missed shipment means extra days of downtime and costs.
