For Ukrainian businesses, entering the European market is a strategy that is not written off. Why? High purchasing power, developed infrastructure, and access to millions of consumers, not to mention the growing diaspora with demand for domestic products. In this article, we will discuss how to sell in the EU with minimal risks.

Step-by-step process on how to sell goods to Europe

About 63% of all Ukrainian exports go to Europe, and this figure will only grow. How to become an exporter:

  • Correct NACE code

Both sole proprietors and legal entities can become exporters. Special registration as a foreign economic activity entity is not required, but the NACE code is. Entrepreneurs can make changes online through the "Diia" portal, visit a CNAP, or the relevant government authorities.

Registration is also required for those who plan to sell on marketplaces like Amazon and eBay!

  • Opening a foreign currency account

For conducting trade operations between residents (citizens of Ukraine) and non-residents (foreigners).

  • Customs accreditation

Submit an application online in the "Single Window for International Trade." Documentation may include an extract from the USR, a copy of the identification code, a bank certificate, and more. If everything is in order, the company (or sole proprietor) will soon be added to the register and will be able to carry out foreign economic activity. More details — in our article.

  • Obtaining an export license

The document is required for a limited list of goods: strategic, military, precious metals and stones, raw materials and valuable types of wood, certain agricultural products. The application can also be submitted through the personal account on the "Diia" platform.

  • Product certification

Find out whether the product requires phytosanitary or veterinary certificates. Other regulations apply to children’s toys, electronic equipment, medical devices, and building materials. Without confirmation that the product is safe, it will not be allowed into the EU.

Another important document is the EUR.1 certificate, confirming Ukrainian origin. It grants the right to preferential treatment without customs duties (or reduced rates) when importing into EU countries. To obtain EUR.1, apply to the Customs authorities of Ukraine.

  • Finding a reliable carrier

Logistics is a critically important element of international business. DiFFreight organizes road transport to 5 European countries, as well as the UK and Turkey. Delivery of goods from Ukraine to Europe takes from 2 to 10 days.

And for entrepreneurs who are just taking their first steps on the international market, we have created the first unique parcel service from Ukraine to Europe. This is an ideal solution for small businesses and test sales: send batches of 10 or more parcels (small-sized goods only) at an affordable price and without complicated procedures.

Possible problems when exporting to the EU

The European market offers both enormous opportunities and serious risks. Beginners face a number of difficulties:

  • Finding buyers, distributors of Ukrainian goods, and in general understanding how profitable the business will be.
  • High transportation costs. Land routes are more expensive than sea routes, reducing competitiveness.
  • Storage and distribution issues: you need to rent a warehouse or use fulfillment services.
  • Strict EU standards. Often, Ukrainian products do not meet European norms, which prevents them from entering the market.
  • Competition not only with local producers but also with products from other countries that have already adapted to EU requirements.
  • Unilateral trade restrictions. Despite the “trade visa-free” agreement, some countries (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia) have introduced restrictions on the import of agricultural products.

For successful export, it is necessary to analyze the market situation, adapt quickly, and build long-term relationships with European partners.

How to sell goods wholesale to Europe

Transporting large consignments is a challenge for both entrepreneurs and logistics companies. What is needed to ensure a smooth export:

  1. A full set of documents: foreign trade contract, Incoterms, invoices, packing lists, waybills, customs declaration (export). Translation is usually not done since documents are filled out in Ukrainian and English.
  2. Proper labeling and packaging. The first is for customs officers to identify the goods, the second is for safety and transport optimization.
  3. A reliable importer. They are responsible for customs clearance: payment of duties (if applicable), VAT, and other fees. They must also fill out the documents on their side.
  4. Delivery according to European standards and laws: from vehicle weight limits to driver documentation. Violations are subject to heavy fines.

Cargo is always under close scrutiny at customs — don’t risk trying to bypass the system.

Your goods may be in demand in Europe — take action

It doesn’t matter whether you have a strong brand in Ukraine or a start-up company with a small turnover. If your product is of interest in Europe, profits will multiply.

It is fair to note that the market is dynamic: you won’t know until you try. But with the support of partners, you can minimize risks and losses. At DiFFreight, we are ready to help not only with delivery but also with document processing, warehousing, and supply chain organization. Leave the hard tasks to outsourcing professionals!
